ORANGE PARK – A rowdy crowd of more than 500 Raines High School students attending an outing at the Orange Park Skate Station drew two dozen Clay County sheriff’s deputies Thursday, March 11.
When Clay County deputies arrived shortly after 11 a.m. there were several disturbances under way in the business. As deputies quelled one argument others would break out. There were no arrests, although three student “agitators” were put into handcuffs and turned over to Duval County school resource officers for further action, the Sheriff’s Office said in a report.
The high school official in charge of the outing – done to give students who passed FCAT a reward – said the fights started when some students began smoking marijuana in the restroom. The official decided to end the outing early and all the students got back onto their school buses without incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Prior to deputies arriving at the scene, a student with the group was taken to the hospital with a possible broken leg, the Sheriff’s Office said. A teacher also injured her leg getting onto a school bus.
